"Problem Horse” Did Not Gallop Yesterday

Boundless, in many ways the problem horse in the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton, was not allowed to throw much further light on his prospects through his activities on the training track yesterday. Instead of galloping on the No. 1 grass, which was available for fast work, he was given striding work on the sand by his trainer, J. R. Shaw. After a fairly steady round he was allowed to bowl along a little more strongly towards the end of the second round, and ran the final three furlongs at about 13sec to the furlong. A decision to start Boundless on another campaign with a middle distance test at Ashburton—this will be his first race since Feburary—has aroused lively intrest. Mrs W. H. Williamson’s quality Targui colt has done much useful work in training and no one is likely to take his chance lightly unless the track deteriorates to soft or heavy conditions.

Newbrook, another making a fresh start at Ashburton, also exercised on the sand yesterday, but not through choice. He defied several efforts to get him to move away for a sprint on the grass, but gave no trouble when W. H. Beck got him on to the sand.

Newbrook is one of two runners for J. S. Shaw’s stable in the Flying Handicap, the second leg of the double. The other one is Magician, which was also exercised on the sand yesterday. Frost, Rain Trialists did not have uniform conditions for yesterday’s gallops. After a frost the ground was firm and fast for the early work, but rain set In before the training was half finished and the ground became greasy. Carat fell tn the straight when galloping towards the end of the training. His rider, P. Daly, escaped injury. Jovean <N Cowles) showed marked ability to adapt herself to the conditions when she ran half a mile in 50 after there had been a fair amount of rain. Joyean had a good weight up. and It was a gallop to attract attention to her chance in the Eiffelton Hack Handicap at Ashburton. Earlier, before the rain set In, Frolicsome (C. T. Wilson) and Malabar Lad (Moriarty) dashed over half a mile in 49sec. This was a smart trial, but it lost something tn comparison with Joyean’s effort under more difficult conditions later Frolicsome and Malabar Lad are rival candidates for the Rakaia Three-Year-Old Hack Handicap at Ashburton. Status Symbol (Swanson) showed her fitness for the Rakaia Handicap in a gallop with Noble Rank (Low) and Waif (Stechmann). Status Symbol was markedly superior to the others and recorded 49 3-ssec for her half-mile. Just beforehand her stablemate Barwood (Collins) reeled off half a mile in 49 2-ssec. He started in a long gap behind Spartacus (Daly) and Massakal (Hadfield) but went four seconds faster than that pair. Not Extended Royal Leigh (E. J. Wilson) was under a good hold finishing half a mile in 51 l-ssec. He should sprint well fresh In the Flying Handicap at Ashburton Fonteroy (Finlayson) and Caprlno rwildermoth), both early trialists with the best of

ground, recorded 50 2-ssec in solo trials. Caprino shapes like an early improver. He is a four-year-old which has been given plenty of time and it would be in character for one of the Le Filou’s to show the benefit of no juvenile racing. A late gallop that compared more than favourably with the best done eany was Count Pedro’s 50 4-ssec to complete a working mile for N. Eastwood. Count Pedro is a form runner tor the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton. Veteran’s Sprint The veteran Meandering (C. M. Williams) sprinted seven furlongs in Imm 32 l-ssec and the last half-mile in 51 l-ssec. He is also in the Tinwald Handicap, and a soft or heavy track would give him a strong chance of reaching one of the places. Allegretto (Daly) and We Wood (W. Martin) did well for performers of their class to run half a mile in 50 4-ssec. Wester (Hadfield), the likely favourite for the Chatmos Improvers’ Hack Handicap, led his stablemate Rising Storm (Wildermoth) by a length after running half a mile in 51 3-ssec.

Manana (Wildermoth) hurried over seven furlongs in Imin 30 4-ssec, the last half mile in 49 l-ssec before there had been enough rain to affect the track much. Everglades (Stokes) followed over the same ground in Imin 33 I-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 l-ssec. Shipmate (Stokes) sprinted six furfongs in imin 17 sec. the opening two keenly in 25sec. Canadiana (Mrs V. Clutterbuck) and Winscombe (F. H. Skelton) sped In from the halfmile in 50 4-ssec. If there is a

return to winter track conditions at Ashburton, Canadlana may be Rlccarton’s best in the Flying Handicap. Checked * Silver Kingdom <N.. Eastwood) had the worst of the track conditions when he galloped, and he was checked by the riderless Carat in the straight so his 52 3-ssec for half a mile was meritorious; William David (Stechmann) worked away from the mile and was joined by Benefice (Collins) for the last six furlongs. They recorded 54 l-ssec for the last half mile. The stablemates, Disguised (N. Eastwood) and Yacker (Telfer), stayed on terms throughout half a mile in 53 4-ssec. Donna Gola (Collins) took 52sec, Llansfair (Wlldermoth) followed in 52 3-ssec, and Glentarkin (N. Cowles) and Scribbler (A. H. Eastwood) took 53 3-ssec. Navy Lark (W. Martin) dropped away in the straight to finish half, a mile well behind his stablemate Corkscrew (Collins), which recorded 53 4-ssec. Mhor (Hadfield) and Last Count (Daly) sprinted five furlongs, the last four in 51 4-5 sec. Mhor will make a fresh start at the second Ashburton spring meeting. Omasohg (Rerlti), one of the first to gallop, recorded 53 2-5 sec. Frigid (Wlldermoth) and Coral Prince (Collins) took 51 3-ssec, Royal Bid (F. H. Skelton) 51 2-ssec, Caprino (Wildermoth), 50 2-ssec, Alten Fiord (E. J. Wilson) and Mygege (Reriti), 52 3-ssec, Hushaway (Wildermoth), 52 3-5, Donna Gola (Collins), 52sec, Llanlsfair (Wildermoth), 52 3-ssec.

Golden Vanity ran a mile easily in Imin 53 2-ssec. Seaend (Miss F. Kerr), sprinted half a mile down the back in 51 2-ssec.
