TOURNEY AT NAPIER
Linwood Wins Championship “The Press" Special Service NAPIER, August 27. Playing its fourth game of the day, Linwood High School won the final of the Napier section of the New Zealand secondary schools hockey tournament today. Linwood was the only clear section winner following its morning victory over Kuranui High, 5-0. Goals were scored bv F. Harding. M. Lumsen. L Hutchison (2), and C. Bhana Waimea College plaved excellently to defeat Napier Boys’ High, 4-2, and was bracketed with Napier and Kings High at the head of section A. In section B, Northland College and St Kentigerns tied. Linwood was unfortunate to be combined with the other five section leaders and to have to take part In a series of three quarter-finals. The Christchurch team was drawn against Waimea and Lin wood played its best hockey of the tournament, to win convincingly, 3-0. Kings High and Northland College were the other semifinalists and Linwood played Kings. This game was an even, absorbing struggle between two teams using short passing, and Kings was a little unlucky to lose, 1-0. Linwood’s goal was scored by J. Toley. In the final against Northland. Linwood continued to play a short-passing game in marked contrast to the long hitting of Northland. Linwood tired towards the end but the two goals scored by Lumsden were just sufficient to ensure victory. Linwood was ably lead by L. Hutchison throughout the series and its attacking forward play, coupled with good passing, enabled it to finish the tourna ment as the only undefeated team, with six wins and one draw. S.I. (N.Z. Press Association) GORE, August 17. Gore High School won the South Island secondary school girls’ hockey tournament, which concluded today. Gore, unbeaten in six matches, defeated Lumsden District High School. 2-1, in the final. Final results were: Section A: Gore 1, Papanui 9; Queenstown 0. Bayfield 0; St. Margaret’s 1. Mahurangi 1. Section B: Lumsden 4. Marlborough 0; Queen’s High School 2. Christchurch West 1.
