Colourful Musical Presented By Scouts

“We’ll Live For Ever”—the musical play by Ralph Reader of “Gang Show” fame, as presented last night at the Linwood High School hall by BoyScouts of the Raupo district —was a colourful, cheerful crusade for scouting. The show’s best moments were in the massed singing, but the acting, though stilted at times, was generally fairly good too, and certainly the diction was clear. The best actors among the boys taking part (Michael Tallott as “Muzzy”, Dennis O’Rourke as “Tom” and the young boy in the large golfer’s hat whose role was never made clear) were well above their colleagues. Able support on the adult side was given by Mervyn Wormald (Charlie), Carol Cornish (Mrs McKay) and Ivor Parry (Skipper). There were plenty of worthy platitudes and sentimentality, and humour for the children in the audience—even if the

wisecracks during the seance scene (when the unprincipled “medium” was excellently played by David Weston) may have caused some to feel that the “amusing scouts” could have done with a lesson in manners. There were also dashes of more sophisticated humour. The comments on the fundraising of organisations (“What happened to the proceeds from the dance?” “They went towards the social.” “Then what happened to the proceeds from the social?” “They went towards the next dance.”) must have seemed familiar to many. How the stage crew managed so efficiently to change so many sets was a mystery But like the whole show it was done without hitch and reflected credit on those responsible for the general product.on. “Wil Live For Ever” will be repeated tonight and tomorrow night.
