IDENTITY SOUGHT
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, August 27. New Zealand lost its identity with the playing of “God Save the Queen” rather than “God Defend New Zealand” at Olympic Games victory ceremonies, the Auckland and New Zealand referee, Mr Batchelor, told the Auckland Swimming Centre’s management committee. He said he was “very disappointed” when he heard “God Save the Queen” played as Peter Snell stood on the victory dais in Rome. Mr Batchelor, who was a swimming official at the
last Olympics, said he would like the New Zealand association to take steps to have New Zealand’s national song played at future games. The chairman (Mr B. Simpson) said: “We will have to put our own house in order regarding the playing of the National Anthem before any change can be expected. “We would have to play ‘God Defend New Zealand* in our theatres and even at our local championships, instead of ‘God Save the Queen.’ ” The move was defeated.
