State House Bar Will Be Reviewed
('-Vew Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 26. The salary bar for State house applicants would be reviewed in light of the recent general wage order, the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae) told Parliament today.
Mr R. Macdonald (Opp., Grey Lynn) asked if the salary limit would be increased from £l6 7s to £lB 10s a week? Mr Rae said he could give no undertaking that this would be the increase. Close Interest He had no knowledge of claims referred to and he did take the closest personal interest in the affairs of South Pacific Airways of New Zealand, said the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine). He had been asked by Dr. A. M. Finlay (Opp, Waitakere) if he was aware the Clerical Workers’ and Engineers’ Unions were gravely concerned about the payment of money claimed to be due to their members bv S.P.A.N.Z. Bomb Search The three children hurt when a 101 b practice bomb exploded at Te Atatu last week-end had deliberately tried to explode the bomb, said the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre). Replying to an urgent question by Dr. A. M. Finlay (Opp, Waitakere), Mr Eyre said a thorough search was being made of the area and so far nothing had been found. A search could only be made at low tide and bombs could be imbedded in the mud. As a result mine detectors could not be used, he said Dining Cars He would study all aspects of railway rolling stock when he visited Japan next month, said the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine). He was replying to a question by Mr P. Blanchfield (Opp, Westland), who asked if the Minister would get full information on observation and dining cars with a view to using them in scenic districts. Superannuation The Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) said the Government would announce its decision soon on superannuation allowances. “This matter is being considered by a committee of the Cabinet,” he said. Mr Lake was replying to a question in the House from Mr N. J. King (Opp, Waitemata) who asked if the Government would expedite the decision because of the widening gap in their value. Lower Fares
The Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) will ask British Railways if they can make available the results of an experiment involving a reduction of rail fares on the Manchester-London line to compete with other transport. He was replying to a question from Mr R. J. Tizard (Opp., Pakuranga). Medical School
There was no impasse in developing the medical school in Auckland, said the
Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella).
The University Grants Committee was studying a report from the Auckland University Senate on the development of the school at present and the committee would make recommendations to the Government soon. Mr Kinsella was replying to a question from Mr R. J. Tizard (Opp, Pakuranga). In reply to a further question, the Minister said no agreement had been reached yet on the appointment of senior staff. It would be about nine or 10 months before a report was completed.
