DREDGE OFF BEACH
Stranded For 27 Days <N.Z. Prtu AitoeiaUon} WANGANUI, Aug. 25. The Wanganui Harbour Board’s dredge Wanganui, which was stranded on South Beach for 27 days, is now safely at Castlecliff wharf. The vessel refloated itself late last night by using its crane motors to haul on anchor lines. The passage to the anchors, placed 2000 ft at sea last week, was jerky. A bulldozer carved a trench around the dredge at low tide yesterday. At this stage the dredge had been shifted 200 feet from its original position. Today workmen were reassembling heavy machinery which had been removed from the vessel last week to lighten her. The dredge will undergo survey and repair before she resumes work.
The second severe frost In four days at Havelock North caused concern yesterday to orchardists with early varieties of plums in flower. A number of growers lit smoke pots to combat the risk of frost damage. A frost of 11.7 degrees was recorded.— (PA.)
