Junior Tennis Tourney Has Large Entry
The first day of the Canterbury junior hard court tennis tournament yesterday had some appearances of a successful take-over bid. Not only were there 56 Southland players but some of their parents contributed to controlling the tournament. All helpers were needed because as well as the 20 or so hard courts at Wilding Park, courts at Avonside, North Linwood, Linwood avenue, and Shirley were used too. With 230 players courts were given plenty of use. At the same tournament last year there were about 140 players, but that was for under 19, under 16 and under 13 sections. This year the tournament has been run for under 19, under 17, under 15 and under 13 sections. Because of the extra courts most sections were well ahead by last evening, and the tournament should proceed in a more leisurely fashion for the rest of the week.
