Touring Actress Also A Writer
The female lead of Arthur Long’s comedy, “Never Too Late,” which will be presented in the Theatre Royal from September 14 to 19. is Mary Orr, an American who has been successful both as an actress and writer.
Born in New York, Miss Orr was educated at Syracuse University and made her stage debut soon after she left the American Academy of Dramatic Art. appearing in “Three Men on a Horse” . on Broadway. “Bachelor Born,” her next play, toured througbout the United States and she next appeared in the only female role in “Of Mice and Men.” After a success in A. J. Cronin’s “Jupiter Laughs' and the appearance in two plays which did not get as far a- New York, she turned to writing and she and her fiance <now husband), Reginald Denham, wrote “Wallflower.”
School Principal.— The appointment of Miss B. D. McLeod as principal of the School of Physiotherapy, at Dunedin, was approved yesterday by the Otago Hospital Board. Miss McLeod has been vice-principal of the school since last vear.— (PA.)
later filmed by Warner Bros. Together they wrote “Dark Hammock” and “Be Your Age.” also filmed. Miss Orr wrote the script for “AH About Eve,” for which she received the Screen Writers’ Guild Award. She is also the author of two best-selling novels. “Diamond in the Sky” and “A Place to Meet” Radio and TV Miss Orr acted in both radio and television productions and for her tour of Australia and New Zealand gave up a part in the television serial, “Love of Life.” Her hobbies are swimming .horse racing and deep-sea fishing. Housekeeping bores her and she claims that she ean hardly sew on a button. However, she likes cooking. She has no children of her own but has been stepmother to Mr Denham’s two daughters, Isolde and Imogen. She will be accompanied by her husband on the tour. Miss Orr is one of the three American players J. C. Williamson signed on for the production. .
