Softball Team Going To Aust.
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. New Zealand will play in a world series of softball tournaments at Melbourne in February, and afterwards will tour Australian states, it was announced at the annual meeting of the Softball Association in Wellington on Saturday. New Zealand would be one of six nations competing, the others being Canada, America, Japan, South Africa and Hong Kong. Preparations were also being made for a tour of a women’s team in Australia in February. A move by the Canterbury association for a women’s travelling fund reserve account failed to get the support of the meeting, which favoured a single account for this purpose,
for both men and women. A remit from Canterbury was withdrawn. An instruction that the council draw up rules for the conduct of senior school tournaments was supported by the meeting. In the past, secondary school tournaments had been based on primary school tournaments. After the men’s inter-provin-cial tournament, to be held at Palmerston North at Christmas, the six leading teams will be graded as a top section for the 1965-66 season. The other teams will play in
a senior B men's tournament. If there are six teams they will play in one section, and if there are eight they will play in two sections of four. At the end of the tournaments four trial teams will be selected and from trials two will be known as the New Zealand team and The Rest. The play-off between the teams will replace the North v. South match. The women’s Interprovincial tournament for the Bensel Cup and the women’s senior B tournament will remain as In l the past.
