COAL MINE FIRE
Gore Plant Destroyed (N.Z. Press Association) GORE, Aug. 24. The Newvale Coal Company at Waimumu, near Gore, suffered a serious loss when the coal bins and crushing plant at the company’s mine were destroyed by a fire which broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning. Members of the Gore Volunteer Fire Brigade were called at 2.40 a.m. but by then the structure had collapsed and coal from the bins was, burning furiously. Much of the coal had to be dug away for the firemen to reach the flames. The brigade worked until 8 a.m. yesterday before the fire was. completely out. A truck parked in the building was also destroyed. The company will carry on operations but no screened coal will be available until a new plant is built.
