Replacement Replaced For Bush Match
(New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, August 24. The Australian Rugby side has announced the replacement of a replacement for its match against Bush at Pahiatua tomorrow. After this morning’s training run on the Palmerston North Showgrounds it was announced that E. S. Boyce, who has had fluid drained from an injured leg, would be replaced by the youthful D. Grimmond.
This evening Grimmond was still worried by a nagging thigh muscle injury and it was decided to rest him.
The replacement for Grimmond is 20-year-old R. Honan, who has played in both tests so far at outside centre. He has had some experience as a winger, however.
In spite of the withdrawal of Boyce, the Australian side is putting a powerful backline into the game.
The Wallabies were beaten in the backs in the second test and the decision has been made to give the back-line further match-practice before next Saturday’s third test.
Boyce’s withdrawal today came as no surprise as he had a lot of fluid drained from a thigh injury this morning. He would also be affected in his handling of the ball as he gashed a finger yesterday and has had to have treatment for this.
In the backs K. Catchpole is recognised as one of the finest half-backs playing today, and his link with the five-eighths, P. F. Hawthorne, has been responsible for many of the most dangerous moves of the tour. In the two centre positions are R. J. P. Marks and B. J. Elwcod, both experienced players, and Ellwood’s appearance in particular will be heartening for the Australians as he has missed a number of matches, including the two tests, with a hamstring injury. Forwards
The Wallabies have rested several key forwards for the Bush match, but such has been the standard of forward play this tour they can expect to cope fairly easily with the local pack. Bush will give away a lot of weight per man in the forwards, but might gain an advantage in the lineouts as Australia goes into the game with P. C. Crittle as the only line-out man of any note. Bush has an experienced side, but not an impressive representative record this season. The flanker, N. Mears,
was a Junior All Black five years ago, while the captain and half-back, R. Swanney, and the full-back, I. McHardy, were All Black trialists about the same time.
If anything, Rugby Park, Pahiatua, will be a little heavier than the Australians like it, but indications are that they will try to keep the game as open as possible. The teams are:—-
Australia: T. V. Casey; D. Grimmond, R. J. Marks (inside centre), B. Ellwood (out-
side centre), J. S. Boyce; P. F. Hawthorne; K. Catchpole; E. Heinrich; G. Davis, D. Shepherd, P. C. Crittle, J. Guerassimoff: L. Austin, A. Laurie, J. Thornett (capt.). Bush: I. McHardy; P. Brooks, R. Elliott, G. Humphrey; A. Champion, I. Mills; R. Swanney (capt.); P. Bassett: R. Horton, G. Wardle, A. Richardson, N. Mears; G. Manderson, A. Udy, P. Eglinton. The referee will be Mr C. Robson, of Hamilton.
