U.S. Classic To Venturi
(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter —Copyright) AKRON (Ohio), Aug. 23. Ken Venturi, the United States Open champion, fired a 69 today to win the 50,000dollar American Golf Classic with a 72-hole score of 275. New Zealand’s R. J. Charles finished 14 strokes behind Venturi. Venturi won by five strokes and earned 7500 dollars. His total was five under par for the tournament. Second was Mason Rudolph, who shot a 72 today for an even-par 280. Arnold Palmer was a stroke back in third place. He had a 69 today and just missed a putt on the eighteenth which would have tied him with Rudolph. Jack Nicklaus was fourth at 285. .Tied for fifth at 286 were Tony Lerna, the British Open champion, who had a 76 today, and Dan Sikes, who had the best round of the day, a 68. Charles shot a 71 today and wound up at 289. He finished in a four-way tie for eleventh place.
