LONDON, August 24. A 15-year-old soccer player, Derek Forster, on Saturday became the youngest goalkeeper to play in any division of the English Football League. The First Division team. Sunderland, surprised by naming Forster in its side to play Leicester City in the opening round of the 1964 season. The game resulted in a 3-3 draw. A schoolboy international I last season, Forster signed as ian apprentice professional
only a month ago. He got his chance as the regular goalkeeper, Jimmy Montgomery, has a hairline fracture in his left hand. It was Forster’s first game in any of Sunderland’s teams. At 15 years and 185 days he was the youngest goalie in the Football League and the third youngest player. Albert Geldard was 15 years and 156 days when he first appeared for Bradford in 1929 and Ken Roberts 15 years and 158 days when he made his debut for Wrexham.
