Standard Of Children’s Art Praised By Judge
Judging Beath’s annual children’s art competition this year was like judging a race where a photo finish was needed for the last 100 entrants, said Professor H. J. SimpSon, professor of fine arts at the University of Canterbury, commenting on the standard of entries at the opening of the competition yesterday.
This year the competition was much harder to judge than it was last year, Professor Simpson said. It was like trying to judge six or seven races at the same time. The children had drawn inspiration from so many sources. Professor Simpson advised the children to try to work from their own knowledge or experiences. This would make the work more interesting and exciting. He was looking for something different and unique, with a spark of originality. “Try to make your pictures say something,” he said. The competition organisers sent notices to 140 schools in Christchurch. About 720 entries were received. Some entries were school projects, but most appeared to be individual rather than school efforts. There were two sections. One for those aged six to nine years, the other for those 10 to 14 years. The winners received their prizes of radios and vouchers from the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), who opened the competition. Mr Manning said he hoped many citizens and parents would visit the exhibition to see what was being done by the children at school. He asked parents to take an in-
terest in their children’s work and encourage them to say something worth while and to build up confidence and security so that the children could express their imaginations. Results were.-
