TWO BOYS ESCAPE
Chased At 90 m.p.h. (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, August 24. Two boys, aged 14 and 15, who escaped from child welfare custody at Rotorua today after a court appearance, were last seen during a highspeed chase south from Taupo this afternoon. The boys, charged with car conversion before Mr G. J. Donne, S.M., in the Rotorua Magistrate’s Court, were remanded in child welfare custody and taken to the office. They escaped through a window and climbed over a roof into Eruera street.
They drove off in a car through road check points at Taupo and Turangi, and during a chase from Taupo, speeds of 90 miles an hour were reached. Constable C. Hamilton, chasing the boys in his own car, had the windscreen shattered when something was either thrown or flew from the boys’ car. Although not injured, Constable Hamilton was forced to abandon the chase. The car was later found near National Park, where' it had run out of petrol. Police are searching the area.
