CHEAPER LAUNCHING
Two Sailplanes At Once Press Association) TAURANGA, Aug. 24. Three senior Tauranga Gliding Club instructors carried out experiments at Matamata airfield on Saturday and yesterday which are designed ultimately to reduce the expensive business of launching sailplanes into the air. A Tiger Moth was fitted with two tow ropes, and successfully launched two highperformance sailplanes on three occasions. The two sailplanes had no difficulty in remaining in station. The 100 ft and 180 ft nylon tow ropes kept the sailplanes in a V formation, one flying above the slipstream of the Tiger Moth and the other below. Time trials carried out showed that from the start of the roll on the ground to an altitude of 1500 feet took only two minutes longer than the same Tiger Moth with one sailplane to the same height. The take-off run before all three aircraft became airborne was only 150 feet longer than normal.
