Commission’s Act Called ‘Arrogant’

WELLINGTON, August 6.
The rejection by the Licensing Control Commission of a petition seeking a local poll on whether a hotel licence should be issued al Milford, near Auckland, was described as “arrogant” at the annual meeting of the Nev Zealand Alliance today.
The meeting decided to press for legislation requiring the commission to hold a poll when petitioned by not fewer than 200 electors of a district.
The meeting also decided to
make new representations to the Government for the introduction of compulsory blood tests for drivers who had been drinking. The Government will be asked to implement the recommendation of the Parliamentary Licensing Committee that the Licensing Coptrol Commission consider and submit to the Government a formula for the limitation of liquor advertising. There will also be a recommendation that containers should show clearly on the outside the alcoholic content. The Government will be urged not to extend chartered club’s rights to supply liquor. It will also be asked to refuse the request of the recent chartered clubs’ conference for liquor at holiday cabins and motels under the control of any chartered club.
