Too Hot, Too Thirsty
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter)
WELLINGTON, Aug. 6.
New Zealand police serving with the United Nations in Cyprus are well-respected by both Greeks and Turks and
really have only two complaints, according to the Deputy-Leader of the Opposition (Mr Watt). Mr Watt, who recently visited the island, told Parliament tonight that the police are uncomfortable wearing uniforms designed for a temperate climate in temperatures of 110 degrees in the shade.
“And their allowance is
not sufficient to allow them to meet their requirements and quench their thirst from time to time,” he said. The daily allowance, now being reviewed, ranges between 3s 9d for single constables and £1 for married officers. The men may also draw in Cyprus whatever portion of their salary they wish, provided married meh make reasonable provision for their families.
