Approval For Transporters

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 6. Approval was given today for a company to operate a transporter service between Wellington and Auckland for the cartage of newly-assembled cars. This was the decision of the No. 7 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr M. F. Calder) after a four-day hearing at Petone.

In line with an amendment, the 12 vehicle authorities sought were granted to Mr C. G. McDermott, a solicitor, of Huntly, as trustee for a company to be formed and to be called, provisionally, Haulaways (N.Z.), Ltd. Initially, the application had been made in the name of Car Freighters. (N.Z.), Ltd. Counsel, Mr R. Stacey, said the change was necessary to satisfy certain internal requirements. • There was one objector at the hearing, the Railways Department, represented by Mr A. G. de Joux, of Auckland.

The 12 vehicle authorities granted are for six trans-porter-trailer units, four of which will be used on a specified route between the company’s Auckland and Wellington depots at Papakura and Paekakariki.

In his decision, the Authority said Car Freighters (N.Z.), Ltd., had harnessed a previously completely unco-

ordinated arrangement and instituted an efficient driveaway service of new motorcars between Wellington and Auckland.

The demand for delivery of. vehicles by the company had already deprived the Railways Department of transport to a greater extent in the last year than was previously the case. “Use of a more efficient and less costly service can be a definite factor in mitigating car prices,” he said. “This in my limited experience is one of the few interests where the public can be served and seen to be served,” he said.

Cash Registers.—The Australian Decimal Currency Board has received 245,000 applications for registration of cash registers, adding machines and accounting machines. —Canberra, August 5.
