DEFENCE OF DE GAULLE

Statement By Adenauer (N.Z. P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BONN, August 5. Dr. Konrad Adenauer, the former West German Chancellor, today defended President de Gaulle against press criticism in West Germany and repeated his call for French-German union.

The 88-year-old statesman, addressing a news conference, said that if one of the six Common Market members did not want at present to go ahead with moves towards political union the others should make a start. Dr. Adenauer attributed attempts to sow dissension between France and West Germany to “Russian sources,” arguing that above all the Soviet Union was to gain by any such dissension. He said he thought the proposed political union should be open to countries outside the Common Market ready to accept the necessary commitments. “We must make a start,” he urged. Dr. Adenauer denied a West German press report that General de Gaulle, when in Bonn last month, had demanded that West Germany choose between France and the United States.
