Protest By Owner Fails

A protest by the owner of Shakes, second in the Selwyn Handicap at Riccarton today to Castle Air, was dismissed. After hearing the evidence the judicial committee ordered that Mr A. R. Bussle's deposit be forfeited. ■Hie protest alleged inteferference soon after the start. The committee also dismissed a charge against F. H. Skelton, the rider of Seaend, for causing interference with Donna Gola and Shakes. The committee found that Seaend lugged out badly after leaving the barrier, causing interference to the other two horses but that Skelton took all possible steps to straighten his mount and found him not guilty of the charge. At the half-mile in the Heathcote Handicap, Wyebank, whose rider W. Gilchrist had lost his irons,

caused the tightening of McCool, which in turn interfered with For Sure. As Gilchrist was in difficulties with no irons no action against him was warranted. Rider Suspended

C. G. O’Connell, the rider of Autumn Haze in the Sumner Handicap, was suspended from riding until 5 pun. on August 8, when the committee found him guilty of interfering with Opportunity by crossing over when not the required distance in front. In the Grand National Hurdles Golden Melody jumped in slightly at the last hurdle and caused a tightening to Cretan. Cretan’s rider, R. A. Jenkins, said the incident could have no bearing on the result of the face, as if his horse had been going well enough at that stage he could have held his position.
