MOTHER GUILTY

Manslaughter Of Child

AUCKLAND, August 4.

A jury in the Supreme Court at Auckland today found Ngaio Ngaronoa Davis, aged 21, guilty of the manslaughter of her 13-month-old son in April this year. Mr Justice Boys remanded her for sentence.

Davis was represented byMr H. T. D. Knight and Mr A. B. Lawson conducted the case for the Crown. Davis was charged that between March 14 and April 5 this year by unlawful acts in assaulting her son, Michael, and by omitting without lawful excuse to perform her legal duty to provide medical care for Michael, she caused his death.

The jury found Davis guilty of the second part of the indictment.

Her husband, Shortland Edward Davis, aged 24. a driver (Mr J. P. Hall) pleaded guilty to this charge on Monday and was remanded for sentence.

When the jury had given its verdict his Honour amended 'the indictment by striking out the allegation of unlawful acts, the alleged assaulting of the boy. The jury made a strong recommendation for mercy.
