£330 FOR MISSION

Thanks Offerings By Methodists

The sum of £330 was donated for the social service work of the Methodist Central Mission at the annual thank-offering social afternoon of the Methodist Women’s Fellowship held in the Durham Street Methodist Church hall.

The offerings, from Methodist churches throughout North Canterbury, were dedicated by the Rev. H. C. Mathews (chairman of the North Canterbury district). “We should never doubt that as Christians we should support social service work in the community,” the Rev. W. E. Falkingham (superintendent of the Methodist Central Mission in Christchurch) said to the women. “Social service work is part of the total mission programme of our church.” He outlined various Methodist social service projects which would benefit from the contributions.

About 170 women, from many parts of North Canterbury, including Oxford, Leeston, Rangiora, Sefton, Springston and Darfield. attended the gathering. They were welcomed by Mrs M. E. Hayman (president of the North Canterbury M.W.F.), who thanked them for their co-operation and support. Mrs W. D. M. Jamieson, convener of the committee which organised the afternoon, introduced items in a programme of entertainment. This included songs by members of the North Beach group of M.W.F.; elocutionary items (Mrs 0. Gee); vocal solos (Mrs O. Young); whistling items (Mr B. Swift).
