Te Kooti's Daughter

(N.Z. Press Association) HOKITIKA, August 4. The death occurred at Hokitika this morning of Mrs Mary Tohi Tauwhare, of Arahura, at the age of 97 years. Born at Bruce Bay, she was the last member of the family of Chief Te Kooti. She was married twice and leaves a family of three sons and one daughter, 35 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and also many great-great-grandchildren. Until she entered Westland Hospital about five years ago Mrs Tauwhare was • very active and took a leading part in all Maori affairs.

She was the only resident at the pa who could speak Maori fluently.
