J. A. Eriksen N.Z. Champion
J. A. Eriksen (Wellington) has been declared New Zealand Correspondence Chess Association champion for the 1963-64 season. He scored 8i points, 1J points ahead of D. R. Walker and D, J. Cooper (Auckland). R. A. Court (Wellington), the previous champion, beat Eriksen, but finished half-way down the list with five points. Winners in lower grades were:—Reserve grade: E. Fuglistaller (Hawera) and E. W. Hutchings (Waikanae), equal. Grade 1C: J. O. Bishop (Morrinsville) and O. N. Thomson (Wellington), equal. Grade 2: V. Goodier (Wellington). Grade 3: B. Hart (Auckland). Grade 4A: L. S. Taylor (Auckland). Grade 4B: V. Sorenson (Auckland). Grade SA: H. J. H. Irvine (Auckland). Grade 5B: D. G. Young (Te Awamutu). R. G. Shaw (Lower Hutt) won the handicap tourney. Other platings were: B. A. Carpinter (Christchurch) 2, E. O. Blazek (Upper Hutt) 3, Thomson 4. The prize for the best game was won by Z. Frankel, of Wellington. The prize was established during the season by a donation from the family of J. A. Cunningham, the late blind correspondence chess player from Dunedin, and is known as the Jack Cunningham Memorial Best Game Prize. Prize-winners for best games in lower grades were:—Reserve and 1C: W. H. Dick (Opotlki). Grades 2 and 3: P. W. Boag (Ashburton). Grades 4A and 4B: L. S. Taylor (Auckland).
