MATAMATA. July 21. The old timers in racing used to say “red heads f® gameness ” Trey would have had plenty of support for their belief if they bad been at Matamata this morning. Red-headed jockey. W. Short went out to school Harapepe over two rounds of the country with Ting Hou, ridden by R. Leggett Both are competent hurdlers but unknown quantities as steeplechasers. They faced their stiffest test this morn-. ing as they were to jump the; big raeeday fences, as formidable as anything in the North Island. Racing men here believe if a horse can do well orer these you can take him to Riccarton or Ellerslie and be will not shame you. After they had jumped three. Short lost a leather and the pair pulled up. To set off the steeplechase track they either had to walk back about half a mile or jump the big board fence near the , three-furlong peg. Short never hesitated and jumped his: horse back out on to the: course proper. i
, When the pair came around to the winning post Harapepe's train®. 7 N. Crawford, was on the way to bring another leath® back so the school ov® the fences the second time could be eom>leted. Short's red hair evidently signifies both gameness and impatience because he did not wait but drove his .horse to take the second -round without any stirrups at all—and made him lead Ting Hou ot® two of the stiffest pumps. ’ He pulled him up to reI cover the dropped leatb® and then took him or® the big board fenre again. A veteran trainer commented: “I don’t know wheth® he should be given a reprimand or a medal for bravery but he is game ** Short's view was that his horse was a good rump® and jockeys frequently have to jump without stirrups in a race.
