DRAINAGE BD ENGINEER

Extension Of Notice Mr H. F. Page, the Christchurch Drainage Board chief engineer, who resigned recently, agreed last evening to extend his notice to the end of September. He had been asked by the board to consider extending his notice until November. “We are grateful.” said the chairman {Mr R. C. Neville). “I am only sorry it is not September. 1970,” said Mr G. A. G. Connal. The board received a letter from 12 members of the en-. gineering staff expressing regret at Mr Page's resignation and saying he had been loyal to the board and given great leadership and guidance to his engineers. “They are saying what we all feel,” Mr Neville said. Mr Connal said that in pub-! lie statements by Mr Neville! and Mr Page on the latter’s resignation he had not seen it said that in deciding to let two contracts there was a saving to the board of £3713, or about llj per cent of the total. Accepting the lowest tender, was not always a good police, said Mr E. C. Leach. He noticed that through accepting one lowest tender the board was facing a claim for an ex- ! tra £9OOO. “No one knows the rights or wrongs.” said Mr F. R. Price “We have acted throughout on legal advice. When we withdrew from letting contracts to a particular group we were acting on legal advice. When we resumed letting contracts we were again acting on legal advice.” Until a court decision was given on a pending action no i one could decide who was right or wrong, he added.
