Air Services
Sir. —The efforts of N.A.C. and the Mount Cook Company to rouse public opposition to the application by S.P.A.N.Z. for a special Auckland-Wel-lington-Christchurch licence are commendable as legitimate business practices, and in themselves show one benefit from S.P.A.N.Z.’s existence—these two airlines are kept on their toes. However, let their opposition be based on whether S.P.A.N.Z.’s plans will improve the service—and selection—offered the public, and not on emotion against an “Ansett-controlled attempt” by “Australian interests,” backed up by emotive phrases such as “New Zealand for New Zealanders.” Like it or not, Australians are our kith and kin, not foreigners, as implied by these advertisements. Sooner or later we may have to face reality in our own interest and become States in the Australian Federation. Let’s not cling to, let alone reinforce, an already strong insular outlook.— Yours, etc., FAIR GO. July 18, 1964.
