MILL USE

Persuasion Explained (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 20. The Acting Prime Minister (Mr Marshall) said today the Government went out of its way to persuade StandardTriumph to go to Nelson by giving some concessions on freight, by offering some assistance with housing and by selling the company the cotton mill building and land at a reduced price. “To that extent it is. true we encouraged the company,” he said. Mr Marshall said, however, that outside the special circumstances arising from the cotton mill building, Nelson was not receiving special treatment from the Government, Except to the extent that the Government wanted to see decentralisation of industry. He was commenting on a report that the Mayor of Tauranga had criticised the Government for going out of its way to persuade industries to go to Nelson.
