TAURANGA BIRD RISK

Air Service In Danger (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 21. Discontinuance of air services to Tauranga may result if the bird menace increases from the formation of oxidation ponds on the airport boundary. The Airline Pilots’ Association’s concern at the decision to form the ponds was voiced by the general secretary (Captain J. W. Dickinson). “For some time the association has been campaigning for action by local bodies to close rubbish dumps adjacent to airfields to reduce, or eliminate, the hazard of bird strikes,” he said. “The decision of the Tauranga authorities, which is being interpreted as a blatant disregard for our campaign, has been received with alarm by pilots because of the potential bird danger from this source.” Captain Dickinson said the association might have to give serious consideration, in the interests of public safety, to a discontinuance of all services to Tauranga if the bird menace increased.
