N.Z. Selects Team Of 68 For Tokyo Games

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 20. New Zealand will have a team of 68 competitors—6o men and eight women—at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The New Zealand Olympic and Empire Games Association tonight approved the selection panel’s recommendation of a team of this size.

The selectors, Messrs E. G. Guy, G. L. S. Cross, and P. N. Robinson put 21 competitors in their first category and listed the rest as up to Olympic standard. Four officials have so far been named to accompany the team and up to 11 section managers may be added.

The team includes three gold medal winners, P. G. Snell (800 metres champion at the Rome Olympics), M. G. Halberg (5000 metres champion at Rome) and P. G. Mander (Sharpie class yachting champion at Melbourne, 1956).

Snell has been nominated for the 800 and 1500 metres, Halberg for the 5000 and 10,000 metres track events, and Mander for Finn class yachting.

The team also includes New Zealand’s first Olympic equestrian and gymnastic competitors.

Halberg will be competing at his sixth international games—a record for a New Zealander and his third Olympics. Others with a long record of representation are Mrs Valerie Young (athletics), T. P. Donovan (boxing), and N. Scott (athletics), all of whom competed at the Melbourne Olympics eight years ago. In their group "A,” the national selectors picked nine athletes, two road cyclists, one equestrian competitor, a hockey team (15 players named), a rowing four with coxswain, one swimmer, a weight-lifter, and three yachtsmen. The only swimmer selected In the top category is the Palmerston North schoolgirl. Miss V. J. Haddon, breaststroke silver medal winner at the Perth Commonwealth Games, Medal Winner Out A Perth Games gold medal winner to miss selection for Tokyo was the welter-weight boxer, W. C. Coe—the only nominated boxer not selected.
