Increases For Warehousemen
Increases in wage rates ranging from 5s to 8s 6d a week have been granted general warehousemen in a new award issued by the Court of Arbitration. The award is retrospective to June 8. The new rates will not apply to workers receiving more than £955 a year. The minimum weekly wage for males has been increased by 5s and ranges from £5 10s for youths under 17 to £lO at 20. At 21, workers will now receive a minimum of £l2 4s a week—an increase of 8s 6d —and £l3 15s when over 22. After 11 years of service or when a worker is 27 or older, he will receive a minimum wage of £l4 2s 6d. Women workers under the age of 21 will receive an additional 5s a week to a maximum of £9 3s.
Travellers’ wages have been increased 8s 6d a week to £l4 10s for the first two years’ service and then to £l5 9s 6d. Casual workers will receive 7s 4fd an hour—an increase of 2fd. An award containing similar provisions has also been issued for soft goods warehousemen.
