USED KNIFE IN DEFENCE

Jury Acquits Woman

(N.Z.P.A.^Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 17.

An all-male jury has freed a raven-haired, attractive secretary, who used a knife to protect herself against a would-be rapist, from charges of carrying an offensive weapon. Miss Arlene del Fava, aged 27, slashed her attacker with an outlawed switch-blade knife in a pre-dawn incident near her home. There was an angry public reaction 10 days ago when she was charged under the “Sullivan law” which outlaws switchblade knives.

The police urged Miss del Fava to carry a powerful whistle instead of a knife in her purse.
