Hamilton Airport Still Unusable
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 19. Hamilton airport, which has been closed to air traffic for five days, was still inoperable today.
An N.A.C. spokesman said tonight that because of bad surface flooding last week Hamilton airport was not likely to be opened till next Wednesday at the earliest.
A sudden cross wind gust at Wanganui Airport today caused one aircraft, scheduled to land there, to overfly and carry on to Palmerston North. Passengers were taken to Wanganui by bus. Another aircraft was able to land a quarter of an hour later at Wanganui. Two large slips . cut the branch railway line between Glen Afton and Rotowharo today. Engineers working to restore the line hoped to have
trains running again some time tomorrow.
Early trains tomorrow are expected to run only as far as Rotowharo. Buses will take miners and schoolchildren on to Glen Afton. The Stratford main trunk railway line was still closed after Friday’s washout. The last forecast was that it would not be reopened before noon on Monday depending on weather, said the Stratford stationmaster (Mr W. C. S. Tolsley).
