WELLINGTON, July 17.
The total labour force was estimated to have risen from 910,500 in October, 1962, to 936,400 in October, 1963, says the annual report of the Labour Department, tabled in the House of Representatives today. This increase is the largest recorded in 17 years. Major increases last year were in the manufacturing industries (10,900), in distribution and finance industries (5100), in administration and professional services (4900) and in building and construction (3000). The demand for workers, as reflected in vacancies reported in surveyed industries, increased a little from 13,411 in October, 1962 to 14,988, in October, 1963. The latter figure represents an overall labour shortage of 24 for each 1000 workers already in employment. The report said unemployment had been at a relatively low level during the last year. The off-season peak was 1239 registered unemployed persons in June, 1963. The number at March 31, 1964, was 509.
