Barriers Not Infallible

WELLINGTON, July 17.
It was impossible to prevent people from committing suicide, the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) told Mr Nash (Opposition, Hutt) in tii House of Representatives today. His comment came after Mr Nash asked him if the Railways Department could install barriers as well as lights at level crossings.
Mr McAlpine said barriers had been placed at a number of level crossings, but motorists still occasionally ran into them while they were down.
