Keith Marley, was yesterday . sentenced to IS years in gaol and his* wife was fined £lOO on'charges involving carrying arms and explosives.
S.A.C. Marley and his wife were arrested oh May 26 and were charged with conspiracy to levy war in the Republic of Cyprus against its established Government, preparing war or a war-like undertaking, using armed force' against the Government, and possessing two mortars with intent to enable other persons to endanger life or cause serious injury to property.' Only the charge about mortars was proceeded with, and other counts of possessing arms and ammunition were introduced.
The prosecutor, Mr Achiieas Frangos, told the court that Marley had “sunk to great moral depths as he was never mindful of the great dangers to which he exposed his wife,” He called for “severest ' punishment” for Marley. He quoted the case of the British spy, George Blake, who was sentenced to 42 years’ imprisonment. Referring to Mrs Marley, the . prosecutor said it was the prosecution’s belief she was “dragged into this nasty affair” by Marley. The defending London barrister, Mr Alan Garfitt, told the court comparisons with Blake were “a fallacy.” Referring to Marley, he said, “He is nothing more than a common criminal. He has done it for money, without any political thought in his mind.”
