SEAT BELTS SUPPORTED

‘56 Could Have Been Saved’ (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)

WELLINGTON, July 7.

A detailed examination of the circumstances surrounding 161 of the 225 deaths of both drivers and passengers in motor-vehicles last year has shown that on a very conservative basis the lives of at least 56 persons would have been saved if they had been wearing safety belts. This was stated today by the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine). He said as the reports of an additional 64 fatal road accidents had still to be examined, it was probable that the possible saving in life could have been considerably higher. Evidence as to the nature lof the injuries suffered by the persons involved in fatal accidents last year was studiedin the majority of these cases where it was felt that a safety belt would have prevented the death, the victim had been thrown from the vehicle onto the roadway and had either suffered fatal head injuries or been crushed by the rolling vehicle, Mr McAlpine said.
