Tax Rise Likely In Australia

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright)

SYDNEY, July 2.

The Australian Budget, which is to be brought down on August 11, is likely to include a 5 per cent increase in income tax, higher postal charges and possibly increased taxes on beer, tobacco and petrol, according to political observers in Canberra.

Speaking in London last night, the Australian Prime Minister, Sir Robert Menzies, indicated a “tough” budget when he said Australia’s defence expenditure would double in the next few years. Defence expenditure will rise by at least £5O million this year to take the total defence bill to more than £3OO million.

The “Sydney Sun’s” Canberra correspondent said higher postal and telephone charges were a likely result

of the recent rise in the basic wage by £1 a week. “The basic wage rise will cost the Post Office £7 million in the current year. The Post Office loses money on each telephone it installs and last year it made a record number of installations,” said the correspondent.
