ANTARCTIC BURSARY
Fund-Raising Response
An annual bursary which will enable a student to carry out research work with the University of Canterbury team in the Antarctic during the summer season seems assured for the next three years at least More than £3OO, with a further £7O promised, has been received by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Antarctic Society in response to its public appeal for £lOOO launched jn Christchurch a month ago. The president ..of the branch, Mr R. J. Stanley, said he was very pleased with the response and appreciated the generosity of certain Christchurch firms and individuals. The results so far meant that bursaries for the next three summer seasons were assured. Donations were still being received. July 31 is the closing date for applicants seeking this year’s bursary. Mr Stanley said it . was almost certain that another team of society members would go to the Antarctic in the coming season to continue work on hut restoration. Last season Scott’s hut at Hut Point, McMurdo Sound, was cleared of snow. It is expected that restoration work will begin in the coming season.
