147 Exhibitors For Industries Fair

The New Zealand Industries Fair to be held in Christchurch from August 20 to September 5 would have 147 exhibitors, including those in the National Food Fair, said the secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. T. Alston) yesterday.

The food fair, he said, would occupy 75 per cent of the space in the No. 2 pavilion.

A team of New Zealand’s finest Army cooks, said Mr Alston, would prove that Army cooks could cook much better fare thap pork and beans. “The Army will give cooking demonstrations that will make the mouth water," said Mr Alston. The largest supermarket in the South Island would be constructed at the food fair, he said. It would enable patrons at the fair to buy many of the new food lines. Biggest Vet Mr Alston said the Industries Fair would be the big-

gest yet, with the greatest numbet of exhibitors. The Forest Service would have a 3200 sq. ft area in Canterbury Court for demonstrating advantages of Pinus radiata. Manufacturing working exhibits would include the manufacturing of diamond rings, pottery, and electrical switches. The special furniture court would comprise exhibits by 18 Canterbury furniture manufacturers, including one working exhibit. “There is a big emphasis on home building this year, with a number of buildingmaterial manufacturers exhibiting," he said. The Police Force, said Mr Alston, would also exhibit as part of the recruiting campaign. Two airlines—Qantas and N.A.C.—would exhibit, and so would meat exporters and manufacturers of wall boards, windows, garage doors, heating equipment, industrial gases, glassware, cars, and New Zealand gins and wines. Talent Quest Mr Alston said that an entertainment theatrette was also being built. A talent quest for adults and children would be held. Arrangements had been made to have No. 2 pavilion heated by large oil-burning heaters with ducts circulating heat to all parts of the 33,000 sq. ft floor space. The final fair lay-out was being prepared, said Mr Alston, with only seven weeks to go till the opening. Preliminary building would start on August 3. By the end of that week more than 200 carpenters, painters, and signwriters would be working at least 16 hours a day at the fair.

. The official opening would be on Thursday, August 20. at 8 p.m.
