CONTROL OF PESTS

Amalgamation Urged (K.Z. Press Association? DUNEDIN, July 1. Serious thought could be given to the establishment of a noxious animal council to embrace all pest problems, Mr J. B. Gordon, member of Parliament for Clutha, said in opening the annual conference of the South Island Rabbit Boards’ Association in Dunedin today. Mr Gordon said the opossum, deer and goat destruction problems could perhaps be best solved by an amalgamated body. The Rabbit Destruction Council’s concern about future progress in eradication had been obvious for some years. In Otago, in particular, there had recently been increased infestation in board areas once down to the policing stage. “If we are going to sell the idea of total board coverage, we must be sure the boards are still doing their work,” said Mr Gordon. He had paid £6O in board rates in the last eight years, Mr Gordon said. Records showed there had been five rabbits removed from his farm.
