Chch. Ahead In Teachers’ Colleges Tournament

Christchurch had most success on the first day of the. tournament between the Dunedin and Christchurch Teachers’ Colleges today. Dunedin won the judo and men’s basketball, Christchurch the gymnastics, women’s basketball, and table tennis. Dunedin won the judo, 37-10. The Dunedin team had better ground work, although its women failed somewhat in the throwing techniques. A general fault was a tendency to use strength instead of the true judo technique. In the individual championship for men, 1. Bray and R. McCone, both of Dunedin, Were equal. L Kenna was third. The women’s championship was won by C. Enright, with M. Dennehy runner-up. Both are from Dunedin. The standard of men’s gymnastics was high, with outstanding performances by K. Connel and K. Caldwell (Christchurch), and T. Stevens (Dunedin). Christchurch headed Dunedin in vaulting and floor work to lead by 12 points. The women’s vaults did not -com-

L. Haddy, J. Tucker, and A. Tonkin, all of Christchurch, gained regular high scores. B. Wilson and C. Wright topped Dunedin’s scores.

In the men’s basketball, Dunedin won comfortably, 37-25. The game was marred by poor handling and inaccurate shooting. Christchurch held a slight advantage in the first quarter, but later Christchurch could not break through a tight defence.

There were many unsuccessful long shots, and too many easy lay-up shots and rebounds were missed. The leading scorers were Jordan (Dunedin) 12 and K. Caldwell (Christchurch) 9. Christchurch led, 14-0, half way through the women’s game, and although Dunedin recovered well, Christchurch won, 28-18. V. Bennett scored 12 points for Christchurch. In an A grade table tennis match, Christchurch won, 7-5; in the B grade, Christchurch won, 114.
