87 Against Northants (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NORTHAMPTON, June 30. The 23-year-old Australian left-hander, R. Cowper, made a valiant bid yesterday to gain his first test selection. With a fine innings of 87, he helped the touring team total 436 and gain a first innings lead of 201 against Northamptonshire. The third test .starts on Thursday.

The Australian batsmen had an enjoyable day against a willing but moderate attack. N. C. O’Neill was at his brilliant best in scoring 90 in 113 minutes, with 13 fours: T. R. Veivers hit 60, his best score so far on the tour, and there were half-centuries from R. B. Simpson (51) and G. D. McKenzie (50). In its second innings, Northamptonshire lost two wickets for 13, but B. Reynolds and A. Lightfoot took the total to 66 without further loss. NORTHANTS First innings .. 235 Second Innings R.
