PETITION ON PARK

Preparation By League

.A petition asking the Christchurch City Council not to permit the cutting up of Hagley Park for a motorway is being prepared by the newly-formed Hagley Park Protection League. The chairman of the league, Mr E. R. D’Anvers, a retired accountant, said the petition had not yet been drawn up, but the league was saking for helpers to collect signatures.

“I have always been a great lover of the park,” Mr D’Anvers said. He said the league had been formed after he had written letters to the newspaper, and asked that persons interested in doing something for the protection of the park get in touch with him.

The petition was being drawn up, and when the response to advertisements calling for helpers was known, it would be decided when and where the petition would be available for the public to sign.

There would probably be a canvass of the city and suburbs, possibly including some house-to-house calls.
