Smoking Reduced

(NZ Press Assn.— Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 29.

Americans have been smoking fewer cigarettes since a Governme n t report last January linked health hazards with smoking.

In the first six months of this year consumption —compared with a similar period in 1963—was down 16,000 million cigarettes, or 6.5 per cent. However, more cigarettes are being smoked than in the period just after the report was released on January 11. but probably not as many as before the report. The drop in consumption immediately after the report was estimated at 15 to 20 per cent. Cigars, pipes and roll-your-own cigarettes are becoming more popular. The Department of Agriculture estimates consumption for the year ending June 30 at 507.000 million cigarettes—a drop of 2 per cent from the previous year. Cigarette exports were up by 2 per cent. Exports are nearly 23,800 million cigarettes in a year. Production of smoking tobacco for pipes and roll-your-own cigarettes increased about one-sixth and production of chewing tobacco increased slightly.
