FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A depression north-east of the North Island and covering much of the country is moving away slowly. A frontal trough lies over the western Tasman Sea.

Forecast: Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast.—Light to moderate variable winds, north-easterlies predominating on the coast; fine, apart from some fog at first; moderate afternoon temperatures. Buller, Westland, Nelson, the Sounds and Central Marlborough.—Moderate southerlies about the Sounds at first, otherwise light or moderate variable winds; some cloudy areas at first in the morning; otherwise fine, with moderate afternoon temperatures. Outlook.—All districts: cloud increasing, with rain late in the day in Westland.
