South-east Asia
Sir, —President Johnson states that America in Southeast Asia “... was determined to help those defending themselves against terror and aggression.” But who is guilty of the terroristic and aggressive actions?. Lord Bertrand Russell, in pointing out the partnership of America and Britain in backing terroristic regimes in South-east • Asia, writes: “. . . they exterminate all who resist . . . this war is an atrocity . . . Flaming napalm is used to .incinerate human beings, cattle and villages. Chemical warfare is' employed. Peoples are forced by starvation to accept dictatorships masquerading as democracies. This is modern barbarism when British and American bombs, rockets and machine-guns constitute the law.” In 1954 America signed th i Geneva Agreement of nonintervention in these countries. The recent colossal build-up of American bases in Asia shows how much trust can be put in American agreements. The New Zealand Government, by sending New Zealanders to Vietnam, is also violating the Geneva Agreement and committing New Zealand to active participation. —Yours, etc., M. GIBSON. June 25, 1964.
