Northern Maoris Win, 15-9

(New Zealand Press Association)

HAMILTON, June 25.

Northern Maoris, 15, defeated Southern Maoris, 9, in the Prince of Wales Cup annual inter-island Rugby match played at Te Awamutu this afternoon.

A crowd of about 3000 attended the match at the new Te Awamutu stadium, in use for the first time.

For the North Island, W. Potea kicked four penalty goals. The All Black, M. Herewini, kicked a field goal. Only one try was scored in the match, and this went to P. J. Myers, the South Island wing. The backs saw very little of the ball in the first half, and it was the South Island Maori forwards who held the advantage in the line-up, Crawford and Rogers, the locks, being outstanding in this department. The Southern forwards also appeared to dominate the tight play. The ground was firm but the ball greasy, which resulted in many handling errors by both sides. The South Island first five-eighths, J. Taitoko, was outstanding opposite Herewini, and, if anything, took the honours from his distinguished opponent. A feature of the match was the duel between the wings, J. Toki of North, and P. Ramsley, South, but the opposite wings, P. Myers,

South, and J. Aratema, North, had few chances on attack. Team Chosen

After the match, the New Zealand Maori selectors named 19 players for Saturday’s match against Waikato . . . but not the 23 players for next month’s tour of Fiji. The game against Waikato will be treated as a further trial for the selection of the touring team. Saturday’s team is: J. D. P. Taitoko (Manawatu); P. J. A. Myers (Wellington), R. E. Rangi (Auckland, vice-cap-tain), J. M. Toki (North Auckland); J. L. Collins (Poverty Bay), M. A. Herewini (Auckland); P. L. Marshall (North Auckland); G. R. Mahupuku (Wairarapa); R; Wainohu (Canterbury), M. Maniapoto (Bay of Plenty), H. J. Maniapoto (Auckland), L. Haddon (North Auckland); J. T. Porima (Waikato), W. R. Wordley (King Country, captain), H. J. Paiaka (King Country).

Reserves: P, S. R. Ramsley (Poverty Bay), B. A. Cressy (King Country), V. M. Yates (North Auckland), R. Wirapa (Wellington).
