CHINESE CREW
Payment At N.Z. Rates (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 25. The former Union Steam Ship Company coaster Karu left Auckland tonight after about 60 seamen had gathered on Marsden wharf to protest at the employment of a Chinese crew to sail her to Hong Kong. The seamen, who arrived at the wharf about 3 p.m. to picket the ship, refused requests from the police and Auckland Harbour Board officers to move away from the ship. They left after Mr J. Lee, managing-director of the Australia - Pacific Shipping Company, Hong Kong, the new owners, had undertaken to pay the Chinese crew at New Zealand rates for a month. Mr J. Scott, assistant secretary of the Auckland branch of the Seamen’s Union, said Mr Lee’s offer was the fairest way of resolving the dispute.
He said members had decided to picket the ship because of the “serious unemployment situation.” “At present there are about 50 or 60 seamen out of work,” he said.
